Ski Report from Camelback Ski Resort - Tannersville PA

Yesterday a friend and I went out to Camelback Ski Resort in Tannersville, PA in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.  It was my first time there and I was a bit concerned as I"m a bit of a skiing snob and have mostly skied the Adirondacks [Gore Mountain], Vermont, and the Catskills.

I was worried that skiing the Poconos would not sufficiently entertain me and even more so I was concerned that it would be way too crowded with bratty kids that don't have manners and general mismangement, like I found at Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ.

Needless to say, I had a great time.  The weather was perfect and though the lines were a bit long to get lift tickets, the lines moved briskly.  The only thing that REALLY annoyed me was the 20 minute backup of cars trying to get to one booth that was for paid parking! They had no teens directing traffic to the next available free space that I have seen everywhere else.  Really now!  Camelback, get your parking situation sorted and you'll be awesome!

Free advice aside, the skiing was a great value and great fun!

Here are some numbers by way of comparison:
-Camelback [Summit Elevation: 2050' Vertical Drop: 800' ]
-Gore Mountain in New York's Adirondacks [Summit Elevation: 4867 feet. Vertical Drop: 3350 feet]

Although Camelback is literally half the mountain compared to Gore which I consider my home base for skiing, Camelback has done a great job of covering the mountain with runs and lifts.  An added bonus is that the mountain is covered in illumination which enables night skiing thus doubling the on mountain ski time you get for your $$$.

We had a great time skiing down the snowy runs as well as some of the exhilaration of skiing down the icy face which is something that any skier in the East is familiar with.  I always say if you can ski on ice, then you can ski on just about anything.

Here's a video of us right after we found the icy side of the mountain and made it down without too much fuss.

See you  on the slopes!

Liking the lichen

Mushrooms fascinate me...

Yesterday we had a major thaw in Central NJ. All of that wonderful snow we got is GONE! Oh well...I took some time during the afternoon to visit one of my favorite places, the Great Swamp National Refuge and caught some video of the mushy and mucky meltdown.

Merry Christmas--->in HD baby!

So for Christmas this year, I gifted [sic] myself a sanyo vpc-cg1010 hd camcorder from Radio Shack.  I managed to resist the video urge until I discovered some amazingly creative works on vimeo.  In case you've not heard of vimeo it's basically youtube but with higher quality videos that show more creativity and less chit chat.

Here's the first vid I posted of the Christmas Tree in NYC's Rockefeller Center. [though HD is not available unless you watch it directly on vimeo.]

Here's an example of a lovely video that I can watch over and over.

New York Life (aka Union Square bokeh) / 2009-11-24 / SML from See-ming Lee 李思明 SML on Vimeo.

here's another mind bender:

Night Light from Colin Hesterly on Vimeo.

all this is a long winded way of saying that you'll hopefully be seeing more video from me in addition to the many photos I post on flickr.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. To a very happy and healthy new year!

Got Google Voice? [or why Google voice is especially useful for the Deaf]

I have been using Google Voice for a long time and love it.  It recently occured to me that Google Voice is a HUGE EQUALIZER for deaf people.

So many deaf people are on text messaging only plans.  That means they don't pay for cellular minutes that they can't use which is a good thing.  Unfortunately, many others are on plans that include some minutes.  For those people, the minutes are a total waste as they cannot use the minutes being deaf or hard of hearing.

Enter google voice!

Now if a deaf person hooks google voice into their cell phones they can actually get an email or text message with a machine transcription of what the caller said when s/he left a message on the line.

This instantaneous voice to text transcription is very useful for hearing people but it's a game changer for deaf people.  Now deaf people can get instant notification of who called and what was said.  From there they can return the call using whatever mode works best.

This means that deaf people can use their cell phones in the course of their day to day life/work just like hearing people.  Of course the machine transcription is not perfect but it's suitable enough to give the general point of the message including exactly who called [if the callers number is in the google voice users contact list.]

Are you on google voice?  If not you should give it a try.
